Welcome to the new site for the Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls Science and Mathematics Departments. In this site you will find information about our science and mathematics departments, resources and useful links.
As a Science College we aim to use our specialist status to create a challenging environment which raises standards of achievement and the quality of teaching and learning in science for all our students, leading to whole school improvement in performance. We believe that we provide a centre of excellence in scientific and mathematics education.
The Science Department aims to promote the enjoyment and understanding of Science and its relevance to social, economic, environmental, technological, ethical and cultural issues.
The courses delivered at all Key Stages are designed to:
develop interest in matters of scientific importance
develop an understanding of scientific method
stimulate an interest in the environment
help students appreciate that application of science may bring benefits but also might have detrimental effects
promote high self esteem of our students and develop their confidence as independent learners, to ensure that they achieve their full potential.
The department helps to develop effective self study and promotes self motivation. Active participation in lessons is encouraged, to ensure courses are enjoyable and provide a successful experience for every student.
We encourage our students to pursue science and mathematics beyond 16. We aim to share our expertise with learning communities by sharing resources and disseminating good practice.
Hopefully, whether you are a student or a teacher, these pages and the resources will be useful to you. If you would like to 'ask the teacher' a list of contacts can be found on our contacts page
